Elliptical Machines – What You Must Know About Elliptical Trainers Before You Buy

Choosing the best elliptical machine for you is more complex than just trying one out and deciding to buy it on the spot. There are many features to consider. And you’ll want to know what all of them are and what you need and what you can do without. In the history of fitness and aerobics, elliptical machines are the only aerobic products that have made a breakthrough. Checking Consumer Reports magazine is a good place to compare features and costs of elliptical machines.

The best way to determine which elliptical machine is the best fit for you is by making a list of all the features that you’re looking for in a trainer. You can find low cost or cheap elliptical machines with a little bit of research online. So if you’re thinking about home fitness and exercise equipment, seriously think about an elliptical trainer.

Most gyms, fitness clubs and even many homes have already acquired their own elliptical machines. Now that you’ve decided to choose an elliptical machine for your home gym you will be faced with many different machines and many different brands, and it can be very overwhelming when you are trying to choose the best machine for you. High-end elliptical machines, like SportsArt Fitness, Quantum Fitness, Precor, Life Fitness, and other brands found in specialty stores, can accommodate users up to 400 lbs (180 kg) and range in price from 00 to 00 (US).

An elliptical workout provides you with an overall body workout without all the strain. Elliptical exercise equipment combines the movements and benefits of hiking, cross country skiing, and biking. Because elliptical machines are a mix between the treadmill and a stair climber you have a great opportunity to cross-train.

Most elliptical trainers are smaller than a treadmill and can be more easily moved to clean or to store away when company is coming. An elliptical workout burns about 13 calories per minute. With quality elliptical exercise equipment, you feel the movement as fluid.

There are quite a few benefits for using an elliptical trainer but probably one of the most important benefits is the absence of impact. Elliptical trainer workouts are generally safe for the joints and provide a no-impact workout as opposed to a treadmill where your feet hit the deck with every step. With an elliptical machine there is no need to remove your feet from the foot pads so there will be little stress on your knees, ankles, hips and back. Because of this the elliptical machines are good for people who are disabled or who have serious mobility issues such as multiple sclerosis, where picking up numb feet and/or legs make it difficult to use a treadmill.

Elliptical trainers use the arms and the legs making it a cross trainer, in a smooth and natural motion. And elliptical machines give you a weight resistant workout which is very important because, weight resistant workouts burn calories faster and more efficiently. If you’re cramped for space at home, an elliptical trainer can be a great way to save space while getting an overall body workout.

Elliptical machines help give you a more healthy body by maintaining healthy bone density. The basic features of an elliptical machine include the drive system, the resistance system and the length of stride. According to the manufacturers, a general estimate of calories burned by an elliptical trainer can go up to as much as 720 calories an hour.

There are many benefits that can be enjoyed by using an elliptical machine. Elliptical machines will continue to develop and provide an optimum workout for its users. The best elliptical machines offer many advantages over other forms of exercise and other exercise equipment. And you can easily find the best discounts and low cost elliptical machine without sacrificing quality. Make sure to eliminate any expensive features you don’t need and check out reviews and ratings.

Question by E: interval training on the elliptical?
I have started going to the gym and being a bit more dietary conscious for about a month now. I have lost around 15lbs or so now and feel much better too. I still need to lose significant wait “70lbs or so” to even be considered a healthy weight for my height and age. I’ve started switching machines a bit but find i burn far more calories “at least according to the machine” than any other machine on the elliptical. It’s time to step my work out up a notch. I want to begin some interval training but i cant really come up with a good system. I would prefer to stay on the elliptical for around 30 min as my work hours only provide an hour or so for gym time and i like to incorporate some moderate weight training in the last 30 min.

anyone with some good info, ideas or links is much appreciated.

Question by Andrews: I want a flat stomach only not a 6-pack?
I used to weigh 170, went down to 130 then up to 145, but that was done unhealthily, so now im dieting in a healthy way and tryin to get to 135 or 130 pounds.
I got to the gym 5-6 days a week;
Monday- work out (i do cardio either “bike or cross trainer” before and after the work out and do some crunches).
Tuesday- cardio only “burn 500 cals” (walking uphill on treadmill or cross trainer). and i do abs before the cardio.
Then again workout, cardio, work out cardio, etc… and take sundays off.
But even during the day, Id go for walks, I bike, jump rope, im very active, and I eat really healthy, im also a vegetarian.

The problem is, my gut its not big , its just .. i love being topless, and im a drummer, when i sit my belly sticks out .. i just want a flat stomach .. not a 6 pack , not now at least , and I HATE and highly dislike crunches, i force my self to do them and i do like 1 set and stop ….
I drink a lot of water also..

running is a great workout for the stomach as are push-ups & crunches. i know you dont like crunches though. i hate them too. try the south beach diet. you lose 8-13 lbs in the first 2 weeks just from cutting pasta, fruit, potatoes, cereal, & bread. i know its a lot but i makes a difference. you sound just fine though! but check out the book! im 16 & ive weighed 105-110 lbs for the last 4 years but i love reading about the dos & dont for the body. good luck!

Exercising at home as many advantages, as discussed in our article Where to Weight Train: Home or Gym. If you do decide home is the best place for you, the next step is to decide what equipment you need. Before you head out to the nearest shop, here are a few things to consider first. All prices mentioned are in US dollars.

A ‘home gym’ can be a place where you exercise and lift weights, and a home gym is also a compact unit of equipment designed to allow you to perform many exercises at the one station. These are also called ‘multi-gyms’ — workstations designed to fit into a spare room, basement or garage so that you can do weight training at home. I’ll mostly use the term multi-gyms or ‘multis’ in this article.

The most-popular, mid-range multi-gyms usually include the following:

– adjustable bench for sitting or reclining

– stacked metal weights with pin selection for load

– pulldown bars mainly for the lat pulldown back exercise

– press bars for pushing and pulling, for shoulders, arms and back

– leg extension system for quadricep muscles of the thigh

– leg curl system for exercising the hamstrings at back of the thigh

– seated cable row system for back and arms exercise.

Types of Home Gym Setups

You have many options in setting up a home gym, but the choices for weight training mostly fall into the categories below. Aerobic exercise equipment such as treadmills, rowers and stationary bikes are always options; but for now I’ll concentrate on strength training equipment.

1. Combinations of portable equipment. Dumbbells, bench, balls, steps, bands, mats, ab workers etc. Nothing too complex here, just basic but extensible equipment. The Reebok Weight Bench with included dumbbell set is a popular starter.

2. ‘Free weight’ stations. Adjustable benches, power racks for holding barbells, dumbbells, barbells and plates (round weights). Mostly movable equipment for more heavy duty use.

3. Multi-gyms based on steel or composite bands and cords. The flexing band creates the resistance. Bowflex brand is best known, Weider Advantage is an example.

4. Total Gym concept. This idea uses an adjustable height, inclined bench and sliding seat platform that uses your own body weight to increase resistance. Example: Total Gym 1500.

5. Multi-gyms based on stacked weights. This most popular configuration uses a cable and pulley mechanism with stacked weights. You move the peg to select the weight. Example: Body Solid EXM series.

6. Multi-gyms with provision for free weight plates. The round weights are manually fitted to the barbell extensions. Example: Powertec Workbench. (Note: weights are extra.)

7. Smith machine multi combinations. The standard Smith machine uses a mechanism that constrains the bar in one vertical plane, unlike free-weight benches and racks. These home gym multis add additional attachments to achieve a versatile workstation. Example: Mega Smith System.

What Do I Want to Achieve?

To help you decide which way to go with gym equipment, you should consider what your goals and commitment are. If you’re starting out with weight training, unless you’re really sure of your requirements and commitment, I would recommend you try option ’1′ in the gym type list because there’s a lot of unused, expensive equipment languishing in spare rooms because people got bored with it and went down to the gym instead. Now I didn’t say ‘because people gave up’ — that’s not going to be you, right?

3 Items of Home Fitness Equipment for Under £1,300

When it comes to purchasing fitness equipment to build a home gym most of us get confused as to what we really need, also we assume a bill of thousands of pounds. Below is an outline of the 3 best types of fitness equipment (treadmill, multi gyms & cross trainer) you need to build a successful home gym all for under £1,300 which in an economic recession is fantastic. If you assume the equipment will last in your home for at least 10 years £1,300 works out at £10.83 per month. You find me a monthly gym member ship

Treadmills

A Treadmill will allow you to walk, jog and run which will vastly improve your cardio ability. Treadmills are becoming increasingly popular and because of reduced manufacturing costs it means you can purchase a home use treadmill for under £450.

Treadmill Quick Tips:   Ensure the treadmill you purchase does NOT have “return to base warranty” this means you will have to return the treadmill to the manufacturer whilst it’s being repaired. The motor power must be at least 1.5 horsepower, anything less shouldn’t be on the market in my opinion. Try the treadmill before you buy it, find a retailer that lets you try out a treadmill in a showroom or warehouse Multi Gyms

Multi gyms are fantastic because they allow you to perform many different weight resistant workouts on one machine. The good news is you can purchase a decent multi gym for under £500

Multi Gym Quick Tips:  Ensure the Multi Gym has a weight stack you cant lift, if the weight stack maximum weight stack is a lot lighter then how can you expect to build muscle (if that is your primary goal). Make sure the warranty covers parts such as frame, covers, welds and upholstery. The brand Body Solid offer great warranties on their multi gyms. Make sure the multigym will fit in your house, this may seem obvious but it’s a common mistake made by the consumer, get all dimensions of the multi gym before you order one. Does the company offer installation of the Multi Gym, some multi gym models may be time consuming or difficult to install, so make sure the company you are purchasing this from offers and installation service.  Cross Trainers

Cross trainers complete the home gym because they provide an all round cardio similar to a treadmill but at the same time help tone your upper and lower body. A cross trainer has limited parts compared to a treadmill, making it less expensive to manufacture and also less expensive on the shop floor. You can now purchase a decent home elliptical trainer for under £350

Elliptical Cross Trainer Quick Tips:  Make sure you can adjust the stride length, this is important if you are a lot taller or shorter compared to the average person Maximum workload, if you are fit then make sure the cross trainer can work as hard as you do, if the maximum load is low then look for a cross trainer that can take more. Load is measured in watts and you should look for at least 250 watts. Make sure the warranty offered is at least 2 years parts and labour. In Summary

In summary make sure you look for a comfortable piece of equipment, if possible try it at a showroom before you purchase. Always look for a good product warranty and make sure the equipment is right for you.

Getting A Good Workout With The Rowing Machine

The foremost reason why people purchase a rowing machine is to get into a habit of regular exercises to tone the muscles and burn off calories. Strength building and cardiovascular is amply provided through consistent workout with the rowing machine. Rowing machine provides a different form of conditioning and aerobic exercise compare to other form of fitness equipments.

Rowing machine is very effective in burning off calories but few use it compare to those who prefer conventional types of fitness equipments such as treadmills, stationary bike and the Nordic tracks. Nevertheless rowing machine is not only excellent in burning off calories as well as building muscle mass.

Among all fitness equipments, rowing machine is the best value for money as it offers a complete body workout as well as being very affordable. It may be simple and convenient to use but learning the different rowing exercises do take some time. As long as you persist, there is nothing you can’t accomplish as rowing cater to people of all ages and fitness level.

The rowing machine gets the job done in lesser time as it not only burn off excess calories but also add more lean muscles at the same time. Exercise with the rowing machine provides a complete body workout, thus producing effective results much earlier than other fitness equipments. Just by simply rowing the machine will offer a broader range of movement than with other activities, including stretching the muscles in addition to rotating the joints.

You can build better endurance capabilities and improved muscles mass just by rowing frequently as it works out the arm and leg muscles in addition to the abdominal and torso. On top of that, your lungs and heart will get stronger after exercising with the rowing machine as it many of those benefits that you can derive from other form of exercise equipments, targeting the upper body as well as raising the heart beat to a optimal level.

Burning off calories is much faster than with stationery bike and rowing is simpler to perform as well as getting you a firmer butt. This low impact exercise is done through smooth movement which is rhythmic and will result in less stress to the joints and muscles when done right.

To get started, you need to master the fundamentals of rowing machine exercises and a rowing machine mimic the actual experience of rowing a boat minus the water. It is such a great workout for all the major muscle groups in the body for instant the arms and the legs. The resistance level can be increased to stretch the muscles as well as adjusting the rowing speed to suit you.

The legs get tone quickly with rowing exercises and the area around the calves and thighs will produce results in no time. Besides developing strong abdominal muscles as contraction occurs when you are rowing, other muscles groups are equally toned. The four limbs that are involved in the rowing help to get you a great aerobic workout.

Sculpting and toning of the body is done through aerobic which will also assist in burning off calories. By increasing the metabolic rate as well as reducing heart related diseases, rowing burn off more calories than any other form of exercises. To do that, make sure that you add a variety of rowing exercises to work out different parts of the body.

The rowing machine is designed is such a way that the resistance level can be adjusted. To burn off calories, the resistance has to be adjusted to lower or no resistance as low weight and high reps equate definition. As more calories are burned, it will decrease the fats level defining the muscles. Increasing the resistance will assist in building muscle mass and strength, therefore for a rowing machine you can easily swing from strength training to cardiovascular workout.

When doing rowing exercises, make sure that you do not have back problem and if you have, there is a need to seek the advice of your physician before proceeding. Nonetheless, rowing is a very versatile exercise that can be carried out indoors or outdoors and the reward is a full body workout.

Rowing machine is a great piece of fitness to add to the home ensemble or the public gym. Provided you abide by the proper sets of rowing exercises with regular frequency, rowing will offer a great and effective workout that will be enduring.
