Question by Nichole S: How to deal with MIL treating me like a child?
My mother in law is very sweet and I have known her very well since I was a teenager. So in many ways she is like a mom to me. But even my own mother has known for a long time that I am an adult and have a good head on my shoulders. My mother in law still treats me like a child. She tries to clean up after me, including in my business that I run. She is telling me how she thinks it should be run. We only have a dog no children and she constantly tells me what to do with the dog. She insists on walking him because “we are so busy that he wont get enough exercise”. She is always giving opinions now to the point where my father in law has started calling her on it. I appreciate her help ocassionally but she never seems to want to help with things we might actually need help with.I have been direct and I call her on it and she just laughs and says oh I cant help it. I call her on it so much that I just feel like I am being mean but she wont stop. I have tried to ignore it but it drives me crazy. What should I do?

For her, “helping” is a way of expressing love It’s hard for some parents when their children are grown and don’t “need” them the same way… they still love and want to help. Try assigning her tasks that are actually helpful to you. My mom does a Costco trip every other week for me and makes 5 casseroles each month for me to keep in the freezer (my husband and I work full time and go to school and have two young children), so I have some healthy quick alternatives that I can throw in the crock pot or oven. We drew the line with her doing laundry (I loved it, but my DH is very picky about how his stuff is folded). We also try for a designated weekly dinner (if you do it midweek and not on the weekend, that keeps your social calendar free) at her house so she gets to cook for us and express her love that way.
