Question by Pineapple Shortcake: Are at-home rowing machines very durable or useful?
I like rowing machines, but I’m more apt to work out at home rather than the gym. I see the models that are relatively cheap … are they pretty flimsy? Is there another exercise, such as with weights or pilates bands that will simulate a rowing machine enough to give a good workout?

I’m not a fan of the gym either, like to work out at home in front of the TV. This company maybe able to help you called Fitquip. They have a range of exercise equipment including rowing machines. They have good prices and payment plan options of $ 10 or so a week. Bought a Treadmill about a month ago from them and got free delivery to which was great.

Not sure about other exercises that will help but maybe they will be able to help you to find what your looking for?

Rowing was my life back when I was in college. I rowed for 4 years in total and started out a total beginner who was overweight and very unfit. When you do an online search, be sure to look for elliptical machines or Ergometer rowing machines too since they mean the same thing.

Basically rowing machines for sale are divided into two categories. The main difference between the 2 is with the handle mechanism. The first type of rower machine has 2 metal arms that move in a semi circular arc as you pull on them. The second category has a handle attached to a nylon rope or string which then passes through a fly wheel. These are the ones that you usually see in the gym. So what are the real differences for when you use the machine?

The machine with the fixed metal bars sets the position of your arms and hands. The rowing action is not as fluid or natural. The rowing machine with the flywheel mechanism lets you decide where to hold your arms throughout the stroke. Both groups have a seat which slides up and down the bar, and fixed foot position into which you tie your feet.

I have a rowing machine and am looking for a workout schedule. I am a beginner. I have no idea how long i should be rowing, what to aim for distance wise, and how long i should be rowing. Anyone have a link or know where i can get a workout plan?

depends on your age. When i first started out for steady state (long distance less intense rowing) i started at 2:30 splits. for sprinting i was in the low 2s. Workouts that my coaches have us do were any of the following:

steady state rowing (over time get to below 2:30 split would be good)
2 x 20min
1 x 45min
1 x 10k (10000 meters)

faster than steady state (this is pushing yourself, but not going so fast that you wear yourself out. these are longer pieces. start out in 230s, bring down to below 220)
2 x 4k
1 x 5k or 6k

sprints (as hard as you can go, with about 10 min rest in between give or take) for 500s and 300s eventually get below 2 min split
4 x 1k
8 x 500m
8 x 300m

when i say eventually i mean over time. it takes time to get good splits. i’ve been rowing for a year now. push yourself to get better but go at your own pace. the times im saying are ones ive gotten to over 6 months of training. exercising 5 times a week will bring your times down faster. maybe do 4 steady states and 1 sprint a week. i mostly do steady states and do sprints during the season.

You won’t lose weight as long as you’re eating a variety of protein, carbs, and healthy fats. Just be sure you’re eating enough. You actually should gain weight, because you are building your muscles.
