How To Choose The Best Elliptical Machine And Save Money Too

In the historical records of fitness and aerobics, elliptical machines are the only aerobic products that have made a major breakthrough. Many people today have chosen the elliptical machine over the high impact treadmill. When shopping for an elliptical you want to find the best elliptical machine of the highest quality while saving as much money as you can of course.

Because the elliptical trainer is a low or no impact machine it’s a perfect choice for anyone suffering from or recovering from any joint problems such as that in the knees, ankle, hip or back. The higher-end machines, like the SportsArt Fitness, Quantum Fitness, Precor, Life Fitness, and brands found in specialty stores, can handle users who weigh up to 400 lbs and range in price from 00 to 00 (US). Many of the consumer models found in sporting good and big-box retail stores can only handle users weighing no more than 250 lbs and cost about 00 (US) or less. If you haven’t made a decision yet and still just thinking about home fitness equipment, seriously consider an elliptical trainer.

The elliptical machine is quickly gaining major popularity in and out of the gym. It’s an excellent choice for home equipment, especially if you don’t want the long time traditional treadmill or stationary exercise bike. The best way to determine which machine is the best fit for you is by making a list of all the necessary features that you’re looking for in a trainer.

Elliptical machines give you a weight resistant workout which is important because, they burn calories faster and more efficiently than other methods. Many people look into ellipticals because they store so well and can use them only when they need them and hide them in a closet when they’re not in use. These trainers use both the arms and the legs in a smooth and natural motion making it a cross trainer,

The important basic features of elliptical machines include the drive system, the resistance system and the length of stride. The general estimates of calories burned with an elliptical are about 387 calories for a 150 pound woman who has done about 30 minutes of elliptical exercise. And with elliptical exercise equipment, your legs travel in an elongated circular type of motion.

There are many benefits for using this equipment but probably one of the most important benefits is the absence of any impact. And recent studies have shown that because elliptical machines are optimizing energy expenditure, the average person will burn more calories. The elliptical exercise equipment combines the movements and benefits of hiking, cross-country skiing, and biking.

It’s best to look for a machine that has a few programs preset into the computer. They provide healthy bodies by maintaining a healthy bone density. And most of them are smaller than a treadmill and can be easily moved to clean or to store away.

Some health tips: with quality elliptical exercise equipment, the movement you feel is fluid. The workouts are safe for the joints and provide a no-impact workout as opposed to a treadmill where your feet hit the deck with every step. While using an elliptical gives you a no-impact workout, the resistance exercise helps to build bone density and fight off osteoporosis.

You can save a lot of money by checking out the prices online and comparing them to the prices in your local sports or big box stores. Many of the online dealers offer free shipping. If you know the model you want you can try it out locally and then compare prices online. Used sporting goods stores and sports consignment stores have slightly used ellipticals at substantially lower prices. Some will be in good condition because a lot of people buy equipment and then don’t use it as you probably know.

The best elliptical machines offer so many advantages over other forms of exercise and other exercise equipment that most people today choose ellipticals. Buyers can choose from a wide variety of trainers that are sold in the marketplace. They will continue to develop with new features as time goes by and provide an optimum workout for its users.

Finding The Best Abdominal Exercise for Your Ab Workouts

Since I am a personal trainer, I am often asked… What is the Best Abdominal Exercise?

And my answer is often it depends on the goal.

Now, I know most people want to know what is the best abdominal exercise to get rid of fat on their stomach, but unfortunately ab exercises by themselves do very little to help you get rid of stomach fat.

This is known as the spot reduction myth. Because of the powerful marketing companies, consumers continually think that they can work a spot on their body and magically melt fat away from that spot, but that is not how the body works.

Abdominal Exercises are useful for supporting good posture, preventing lower back pain, and improving function and sports performance. Abdominal Exercises are not good for spot reduction of belly fat.

Okay, back to the best abdominal exercise.

There was a study done called finding the safest abdominal challenge measuring work to compression ratio. This study looked at 9 ab exercises and compared the muscle work in the abs to the pressure in the lower back during each exercise.

According to this study, the exercise that worked the abdominal muscles the hardest while putting the least pressure on the lower back was crunches with the feet on a bench or ball. When the feet are lifted it takes away some of the arch in the lower back and takes some pressure off the joints.

In addition, the exercise that worked the abdominal muscles the hardest also put the most pressure on the lower back and that exercise was double hanging leg raises.

To determine which exercise is the best you must take into consideration the fitness goal. For example if someone has a slightly achy lower back, crunches with the feet up may be the best abdominal exercise because it works the abs really hard but does not put a ton of pressure on the lower back.

However, if you are an athlete looking for serious core strength, double hanging leg raises might be the best abdominal exercise for you.

And what about the oblique muscles. The external and internal oblique muscles actually work really hard when you move forwards, like in crunches or sit ups, but in order to maximize the muscle work in the obliques you must incorporate twisting, rotation, or side bending.

So if you wanted to find the best exercise to strengthen the obliques you might do side planks, bicycle crunches, or oblique crunches.

Nearly all exercises have a benefit, so the most important thing is to be active and exercise. The best exercise for you may be the one that you like the most because you can consistently do it.

Whatever ab exercise you choose, keep good form and stay consistent!

Question by Al: How heavy should i be going when performing shoulder exercises to gate the best results in size. ?
i am currently working with shoulder lateral raises bent over raises and incline pr own raises, should i lower the weight and use better form and fill the the muscle being worked or pill on the weight. please help.

Best answer:

Answer by Bravodor
More weight at the sacrifice of form only makes sense in heavy compounds.

Isolation exercises like raises are completely pointless unless your targeting the muscle.

I do side/front laterals with 25 pounds, could I do more ? yeah, but what would be the point ?

My objective is to burn my shoulders out so hard with presses that by the time I finish with raises 20 something pounds is plenty for complete failure by 10 reps.

raises are “shaping” lifts, as much as I hate to use that word, your bread and butter should be overhead presses, heavy and hard.

Commercial Gym Equipment: the best alternative to private equipments?

It is not uncommon to find that most people prefer to get a hold of commercial gym equipment as it relates to the ever necessary and important art of keeping fit which normally falls in the realm of being mentally and physically transformed. This has been a trend that has seen lots of individuals go for equipments that are tagged commercial as against those that are manufactured for private use. The reason for this is connected to the fact that the so called private gym equipments do not last as long as it is supposed to, especially when it is been used in the confines of the home or office. This is so because most of the people that actually go ahead to get them do not really keep to a set routine that sees them take out different exercise or workout plans due to reasons such as been too tired and not really getting any form of motivation from a personal instructor or gym instructor as the case may be.

The gym is the perfect place to start any routine and calculated movements that would see you loose some weight or build up some abs as the case may be, but it not all about just getting some money available to register in these different gyms and become a card carrying member. You should already have the basic idea as it relates to what your body really needs as at the time of your registration. Some people actually go ahead to purchase some multi home gym equipments without really knowing how far they need to go as it concerns their structured strength. Most of these gym equipments after they must have been purchased, are just not strong enough for use by different people at once, but in a case where an individual actually saves up the money intended for the purchase of a private gym equipment for the home or the office, and further goes for a gymnasium in his or her neighborhood that actually boasts of a commercial gym equipment, you would find that your initial dreams of seeing some abs appear and all that unwanted fat burn, would not only be realized, but you would also have fun in the general workout process.

Commercial gym equipment is seen as a cheap alternative to getting fit as it presents us with different  possibilities of achieving our set out targets in the gym as it relates to our keeping fit and healthy. This is a well known fact as they are mostly constructed in a ways that often stands the test of time as it relates to the daily use of it. This cannot be said of the private gym equipments as observed above; they are mostly fabricated to be an item of decoration in the homes without it having to add any positive value to the body.

With all, this in mind, it is very important that people actually go for machines or multi gym equipments that have been tagged as pre owned just for the fact that they usually are very strong when it comes to the way and manner it had been used, and at the same time, you find out that taking this route actually saves you a lot of money in the long run. Getting a hold of commercial gym equipments has even been made a lot easier now as there are numerous companies that deals in them and takes a hold of other gym equipments that are refurbished and re plated as the case may be for the use of individuals like you and I.

The Best Olympic Weight Lifting Exercises

So, you’ve discovered the existence of olympic weight lifting.

Good for you…seriously.

You’ve discovered one of the missing links to why so many people get stuck spending countless hours of strength weight training in the gym without achieving the results that they are getting of tired of trying to get.

The wrong weight lifting tips and routines mixed with a bunch of bull crap fad diet garbage has left 1000′s of people burned out and giving up.

Let me ask you two simple questions.

Would you like to get more from your weight training schedule than you ever though possible in less time than you’ve ever set aside to do your training?

Would you like to significantly increase your muscle building, strength training or fat burning results?

Obviously you are answering YES to these questions.

The what and the why

You’ve probably seen videos or pictures of guys dressed in what almost looks like a ladies one piece swim suit competing in the Olympic Games.

All the finger pointing at their outfit stops however when you watch the guy grab onto a barbell absolutely loaded with plates and pick it up over his head.

This is Olympic Weight Lifting.

Now, we don’t want to limit ourselves to the exercises used in competition only because there are only two. What we want to do is utilize the kind of exercises that these guys (and girls) use to be able to accomplish such a feat.

Squats, Dead Lifts, Dips, Rows, Bench Presses, Military Presses, Box Jumps, Chip Ups / Pull ups, Clean and Presses, Clean and Jerks, and Snatches are the exercises we’re talking about.

That was the what now what about the why.

There are three simple reasons they work better, they work faster and they make you stronger.

These exercises work a large number of your body’s muscles at once.

This does two very important things.

First, it trains your muscles to work in unison. This is how you use them in real life activities like work, sports, sex etc. Therefore your training is much more beneficial for what your doing it for; living your life.

Second, your workouts will get done much faster. It goes without saying that if you work multiple muscle groups at once rather than one or two at a time you will be done with the gym and on with your life much more efficiently. Get done and get out is our motto.

Last, these exercises will make you stronger than any other kind of exercise on the planet. They require and build what is called “explosive strength”. Competition weight lifting in the Olympics requires huge amounts of explosive strength. That is exactly why they use these exercises in their training routines.

Conclusion

Using Olympic weight lifting exercises in your routine will help you to build muscle faster, build more strength than you ever thought you’d have and also because of it’s intensity it will help you burn more calories faster and sky rocket your metabolism too making it ideal for a fat burning routine.

Don’t see too many fat people in the Olympics do you? It creates more functional benefit than any other kind of routine as it trains your body in a way that you actually use it.

So, got kick some butt in the gym or at home or where ever it is you do your thing. Use the above exercises to create a routine that will get you to your goals. We promise, you’ll achieve better results, get there faster and be stronger than you ever though possible.

Best Exercises for Hips Toning

Squats: squats are one of the most effective workout exercises to tone your butts. There are distinctive kinds of squat exercises, one being chair squats. All you need to do is to stand with your feet hip-width apart and make an attempt to squat, with your back straightened and tummy tucked in. Keep a chair on your backside and make an attempt to sit, with your butts slightly touching the chair. To stand, squeeze your butts. Repeat this exercise for about 8 to 12 times.

Each person is different and fat gets stored in the body in a certain order. That order is determined by gender and genetics. It’s a myth that women can selectively lose fat in the hip region. In fact, ‘spot reduction’ is something that advertisers use to prey on unsuspecting customers desperate to try anything to shape up certain areas of the body. You have probably wasted time and money on gadgets, weight loss creams and other gimmicks. When one loses weight, the ‘reduction’ is general i.e all over the body, but never in one ‘spot’.

While on your right side, clasp hands around bent knees. Inhale deeply. With right elbow push yourself up and over to your left side, exhaling as you drop limply to the floor. Let go again and relax for 5 seconds. Repeat cycle three times, rolling from left to right, then right to left.

This hip toning exercise works on the gluteus mediums muscle. You can’t do this exercise on a carpet. Smooth floor is better. Stand with feet stretched apart to hip width with one foot on a paper plate. Slide your foot, which is on the paper plate, away sidewise while keeping torso and abs upright. You will need to bend the other knee. Hold it there for a while and get the foot back sliding to original position. Repeat the same for the next foot and then the cycle for 8-10 times. You can rest your hands on your torso.

Another choice at the gym is your inner and outer thigh machine usually made for the gals and normally in the ladies section. This machine does not have a gluteal component on it so you have to go over to your multi hip machine. This one is s sometimes used for inner and outer thigh and additionally for hip flexors.

Swimming has such a slimming and toning effect on the whole body. The only problem is, how you find a pool you can use all year round. Instead of just plain swimming back and forth without stopping, I prefer that you swim as fast as you can from 1 side of the pool to the other side. Once you get there, rest 30 seconds and keep repeating this for 20 minutes. Those are 2 of the best hips toning exercises you can possibly do.

Starting Position: – Stand on one leg with a slight bend in your knees. Hold a dumbbell in each hand and allow them to hang down at your sides. Movement: – Inhale, keeping your heel in contact with the floor at all times, slowly lower into a squat position. Exhale as you slowly straighten your leg, keeping your head and chest up, returning to the starting position. Repeat as required. You can start with 2 lb dumbbells and work your way up to 5 lbs within 3-4 weeks.

Some Of The Best Tips For Buying a Treadmill

Basic treadmill models can start at 0 and can go up to 00. Treadmills have become the hottest home exercise equipment choice. There are many competing models of treadmills to choose between.

With treadmills you need to watch out for the impact involved when your feet hit the belt; your body absorbs up to two and a half times your body weight.

A well-constructed treadmill is a piece of home exercise equipment that every member of your family can enjoy.

AC motors that are found in some treadmill units run at one continuous speed and rely on a transmission to regulate speed whereas units powered by DC motors use variable voltage to regulate the speed at which the belt spins.

A pre-programmed workout registers your heart rate without being connected to the treadmill by a cord or wire. Most treadmills come with an electronic console that displays workout feedback such as speed, distance traveled, time you’ve been working out and calories burned.

Notice that some treadmill heart rate monitors clip onto an ear or, for more accurate readings, strap on to the chest. Some treadmills monitor your heart by way of sensors built into the frame that are gripped by the hands, but this can only be done if you’re walking not running.

Safety features on a treadmill are especially important if you plan to work out alone or if you have small children who might accidentally start up the treadmill. The deck is the belt area on which actual running, jogging and walking take place.A heart rate monitor is another useful feature to look for.

The newest models of treadmills come with many extra features.Purchasing fitness equipment over the Internet has grown at a fast pace over the past few years.

Treadmills are a very important investment, regardless of the price; if it’s not right for you, you don’t want to find this out after you’ve set the treadmill up at home. Once you’ve decided on the treadmill that you think is right for you, make sure to compare prices online.

If you plan to use a treadmill purely for walking you are not likely to need an expensive top-of-the-line machine. Commercial club treadmills are reliable and well constructed; do look into a home version. You’ll probably want to buy a unit with a motor that delivers 1.5 to 3 continuous horsepower.

Consider bringing your water bottle and towel to the treadmill store and try out their treadmills. To make sure that your treadmill is sturdy and comfortable and doesn’t operate noisily, step on it and test it out before you buy.

The first thing to consider when shopping for a home treadmill is the kind of use you need it for. If you’re looking for a heavy-duty treadmill that can withstand running as well as walking, be prepared to spend more money. Once your equipment has been up and running, lubricants and cleaners can be used to take good care of it.

It’s best to get a treadmill that has a warranty that lasts for at least a year. If there’s a treadmill you’ve enjoyed using regularly at your local gym or fitness center check to see if there’s a home version available in your price range.

Walking, whether on a treadmill or not, is one of the best approaches anyone can take toward fitness. Be careful, any type of jogging or running, whether on a treadmill or not, puts strain on leg and hip joints.

If you have severe leg conditions, a treadmill may not be the best choice of home exercise equipment for you. Better quality treadmills provide excellent cushioning to limit the impact on knees, ankles, hips and lower backs.

And remember, home exercise treadmills are a large investment financially and in your fitness and much thought and preparation should go into the purchase of any new treadmill.

Take time to do your research, the same way you would any major purchase and buying a treadmill won’t be difficult. Purchasing a treadmill can be overwhelming but with help from treadmill ratings and treadmill reviews you should be able to make an informed decision.

Who Manufacture the Best Elliptical Machines?

The one thing you will notice when researching the elliptical machines market, is the wide range of manufacturers and models. Each manufacturer produces different models for different grades of elliptical machine whether it is for commercial or home use.

Just like treadmills, ellipticals imitate walking, jogging and running but in an oscillating motion utilising both arms and legs. All models will allow the user to create this motion with their body as the majority of elliptical machines come with both moving handle arms and linking foot pedals. Obviously the more use the machine will see i.e. in gyms and health clubs, the more durable and stable they have to be. With quality comes cost. Precor and Life Fitness offer some of the best models on the market for commercial use as they build to last and will normally incorporate heart rate monitors, calorie counters and workout programs into their consoles as you would expect. Some of their elliptical machines fall just within affordable prices for fitness enthusiasts buying for home use. It really depends on the price you are willing to pay and whether you can clearly see how cost-effective home cardio equipment can be.

For the more mid-range elliptical machines we see Smooth Fitness offering very much affordable but great value machines. Much of their ranges are developed for home use and with the value you would expect. Smooth Fitness machines come with fantastic warranties and with new features such as iPod docking stations with built in speakers and adjustable fans. They also offer lifetime warranties helping dictate the quality of their products and you are guaranteed great value for money.

Towards the lower end of the range, this is where manufacturers start to jeopardize build quality. With cheaper materials being used to help keep costs low, to produce affordable elliptical machines for the home, constant daily use can mean bad news. However, Schwinn offer some trendy models within the lower budget price range for the home and customer reviews are generally very good. The majority of their best models offer the same features that you would expect on commercial elliptical machines.

There are many great names in the elliptical world but it is important to know that price, normally means quality. For the best value for money make that investment and you will soon reap the rewards.

The Best Weight Lifting Exercises

All weight lifting routines must contain certain exercises in order to provide good results. There is a hierarchy of effectiveness when it comes to weight lifting exercises. And to obtain the best results, the most effective exercises must be included in all workout routines. Every muscle group has its own exercises that work out that muscle the best. So if you want to get the best results possible, no matter what your weight lifting goals are, all weight lifting routines you use must contain these exercises.

The most important body part in the body is the legs. The legs bring stability, balance and strength to the entire body. When it comes to weight lifting, the same holds true. In fact, if you have weak legs, it’s hard to achieve overall muscular strength because of the importance it has to the rest of the body. There are many exercises that work out the legs effectively because there are many muscles in the legs. But these exercises are the best of the best: squats, leg curls, lunges, and calf raises. If you include these exercises in all you workout routines, you can expect to see stronger legs.

Another important muscle in the body is the back. The back brings stability to the upper body as well. But more important, it provides the upper body with a lot of additional strength. For some reason, the back isn’t given the respect it deserves by weightlifters, probably because it isn’t a muscle that grows very big or fast. However, this shouldn’t impact how hard you should workout this body part. If you want a strong back, include these exercises in your weight lifting routines: weighted pull-ups, standing barbell rows, and deadlifts. With these exercises included in all your workout routines, your back will grow stronger than it has ever been.

The most important upper body muscle is probably the chest. Because of it’s size and position on the body, it’s a muscle that provides the upper body with most of it’s strength. Also, it’s a muscle that weightlifters define themselves on. If it’s big and strong, weightlifters think that they are strong. If it’s small and weak, weightlifters think they are weak. However, the importance of the muscle goes much further than personal thoughts and appearances. A strong chest can be obtained if you include these exercises in your workout routines: bench press, incline press, dumbbell flyes, and decline press. All weight lifting routines must include these exercises for the chest, otherwise results won’t happen.

A final muscle group that many weightlifters love to target is the arms. The arms consist of three parts: the biceps, triceps and shoulders. This is most weightlifters favorite muscle because in most of their minds, big arms mean strength. Although this isn’t necessarily true, it seems to affect most weightlifters as they put more time and effort on such a small part of the body. However, the arms are a crucial muscle because they partake in almost every exercise weightlifters do. For strong arms, include these exercises in all your weight lifting routines: barbell curls, hammer curls, weighted dips, tricep pushdowns, overhead press, and shrugs. As long as you put in good and equal effort to each of these exercises and include them in all your workout routines, expect to see good results fast.

Weightlifters must understand that achieving their goals means performing the correct exercises to effectively workout their muscles. That’s why all their workout routines must contain the most effective exercises for each muscle group otherwise success cannot be expected. Whether you are exercising your chest or your legs, there are certain lifts that must be done over others because of how well they target that particular muscle. If you want to achieve your goals, make sure all your weight lifting routines include those exercises.

Best Ab Exercises For Effectiveness

What are the best ab exercises and most effective on your abdominal muscles? If you are trying to get great abs and a flat stomach by doing 100 crunches, then be sure to read on to find out what one study deemed as the best ab exercises.

According to one study conducted by the Biomechanics Lab at San Diego State University, the bicycle maneuver was the top rated abdominal exercise with the traditional ab crunch coming in at the bottom three.

This study used specialized equipment to measure the activity in the abdominal muscles to determine the best ab exercises. There were 30 men and women who participated in this study ranging in age from 20 to 45. Each participant performed 10 to 12 reps of 13 common abdominal exercises. Each exercise was given to the participants randomly and the participants were allowed to practice each exercise.

The study also included some popular abdominal exercise equipment in this study including the ab roller, ab rocker and an exercise ball. Each abdominal exercise was measured for effectiveness in the rectus abdominus muscle and the oblique muscles. The data was gathered and analyzed.

Best Ab Exercises

Topping the list for the most effective in the rectus abdominus was the bicycle maneuver, captain’s chair and coming in third was the exercise ball crunch. The best ab exercises for the oblique muscles were the captain’s chair, bicycle maneuver and the reverse crunch.

Coming in close behind the top 3 for the rectus abdominus were the vertical leg crunch, torso track and the long arm crunch. The number 4 through 6 spots for effectiveness in the oblique muscles were the hover, vertical leg crunch and the exercise ball crunch.

Worst Ab Exercises

The bottom 3 abdominal exercises for both the rectus abdominus and oblique muscles were the Ab Rocker coming in last then the exercise tubing pull and coming in 11th was the traditional crunch.

This study did state that all the abdominal exercises studied showed some effectiveness in the ab muscles, however some were more effective than others.

Getting Flat Abs

Although there are probably 100 abdominal exercises for you to try, in order to flatten your stomach you must also focus on reducing belly fat. The best exercise to lose belly fat is not an abdominal exercise. Rather it is aerobics. That’s right. You must do aerobic or fat burning exercises in order to eliminate and reduce fat. If all you do is abdominal exercises then all you accomplish are rock hard abs hidden under a layer of fat.

Your weekly exercise routines should consist of both aerobics and strength training. By including both in your workout routines you will not only be burning calories and fat but building lean muscle. The more lean muscle you have the more calories you burn.

But of course all this exercising doesn’t give you free reign to eat what ever you want. You still have to incorporate a healthy eating plan to help reduce fat and build muscle.

To really get flat abs and that treasured six pack abs be sure to eat right, do aerobic exercises and focus on the best ab exercises to get the most out of your abdominal exercise routine.

Build Big Biceps Fast – Use The Best Bicep Exercises For The Fastest Results!

What other way can you build big biceps without using only the best bicep exercises. Being physically fit and looking good in your clothes is enough motivation for most people to go to the gym. But when its hot outside, its the opportunity for most exercise enthusiasts to show off their arms.

Lets face it, lots of people (us men usually) work on their upper body muscles more than the lower body. Why? Because those are the T-shirt muscles. Nothing looks better in a tank top or a basketball jersey better than a great pair of arms. Building big biceps using the best bicep exercises is a sure-fire way to get that muscular, powerful, and sexy look that everyone is going after.

The best way to build big biceps is to use exercises that allow you to move alot of weight, focus on keeping the tension on the muscle, and changing up the exercises so you can keep the muscles from adapting to the same thing.

Try These…

My first choice would be Close Grip Chin Ups.This is the best of the best biceps exercises. This exercise is great because it allows you to move alot of weight. Think about it…if you weigh 200lbs and you are pulling yourself up for 8 reps, can you do that if you loaded up a curl bar with 200lbs? Im willing to bet you probably could not. But with chin ups you force your bis to contract hard and pull yourself up. Plus it also gives your lats (aka wings) a hell of a workout. This should be a staple in anyones workout. Also in this exercise there are also other muscles that come into play instead of just the bi’s and your lats. Those are called the stablization muscles and those are the ones that help you balance and stablize yourself as you ascend and descend from the chin up bar.

As far as isolation movements go, nothing beats Standing Barbell Curls. This is the best one there is when it comes to building big biceps. This is a great movement that allows you to go heavy and it hits the biceps directly. Be sure to get the most from this exercise by using correct form. I always see alot of people at the gym who need check their form. The proper way to do barbell curls is to hold the barbell in front of you with a slight bend at your knees. Keep your elbows at your sides. Now without moving your elbows forward, curl the weight up as far as you can. If you do it correctly the bar should be somewhere in the middle of your chest and not all the way up by your mouth. If its that high then you let your elbows swing too far out in front of you. when you curl the bar as high as you can, hold it and squeeze those biceps for one second. Lower the bar under control. Dont lower it down so far that your arms are totally straight. Bring the bar down and keep some tension on the bi’s by lowering it about 80% to 85% of the way down and keep a slight bend at the elbows.

I could have put alternate dumbbell curls on this list, but why do that when you can do Incline Dumbbell Curls. This is a great exercise because it allows you to be in a position to put a strech on your biceps. Sit in an adjustable bench and put it on an incline (not too steep LOL!). Let the dumbbells hang at your sides. Bring them up one at a time or simultaneously. I think its harder when you lift them at the same time. Give it that slight twist and squeeze the bi’s at the top. Lower under control and repeat. Guaranteed you will feel this tomorrow!

The last exercise i will mention is the Preacher Curl. Use a preacher curl bench and an EZ curl bar. Adjust the seat to the right height. The seat should not be so low that your shoulders come over the curling pad. It also should not be so high that you’re hunched over the pad. Grasp the bar using a shoulder width grip. Do not swing or rock for momentum to get the weight moving. Try to make the exercise work the biceps. Curl the bar towards your chin. On the downward phase, lower the bar under control and work the muscle on the way down as well. Can also be done one arm at a time.

Why not use these exercises in your workout routine? I always stick with what works and these movement are battle tested and have been producing great results for a long time. Why shouldnt they work for you? These are the best bicep exercises in my opinion and you will understand why provided that you implement them in your routine.

Are you going to get started on building the type of arms that command attention? Are you satisfied with your arms? Or could they be more to your liking if you worked just a little bit harder? Look at them right now…can they be better??

How To Buy The Best Treadmill For Yourself

As a personal trainer, I get asked many times about what brand of treadmill to buy. However, from personal experience, I will not buy based on name because there are many more factors to consider. I will also not review any brand in this article. Do not simply walk into a shop and get tempted by ” Deposit, 0% interest” deals. An impulsive purchase like that will leave you regretting for many years later.

Before going into the specifics of how to choose a treadmill, you need to sit down and think about the following questions:

1. What is the reason for getting a treadmill? If you want something to do your daily walks at a pace that raises your heart rate, you can opt for a treadmill with a low maximum speed and no incline. However, if you are planning to get in shape for a vacation where you will be hiking and biking, then you should opt for something with higher maximum speed and incline functions.

2. What is your budget? There are many good models you can purchase for 00 or less. I suggest 00 because most people cannot afford 00+ for a treadmill and I know you can get a good treadmill for less. There are great deals online so shop around.

Once you have decided on the reason and budget, you have to do the following before you go shopping for your treadmill.

1. Measure the floor area you have to position your treadmill.

2. If you want a treadmill that folds, measure the storage area you have for the folded treadmill.

3. Measure the weight of the heaviest person that will be using the treadmill. Each treadmill has a maximum weight limit. If you weigh between 45kg – 90kg (99lbs – 198lbs), a treadmill with 100kg (220lbs) weight limit will be sufficient.

Now you are ready to go shopping for a treadmill.

Standard features that should come in a treadmill for your home. These are features that will be important to you.

1. Foldable – As a home user, you never know if one day, you will have visitors to your house or need to move house. A foldable treadmill on wheels will make repositioning the treadmill a breeze.

2. Electronics – Heart Rate monitor, Time read-out, Distance read-out, Speed read-out, Calories burned. An electronic “track” lighting up to show my progress. At least 5 preset programmes and 3 more programmable slots for you to define your own workout routine.

3. Belt – Try out your shortlisted treadmills. Take note of how long and wide it is. Bottom line: you must be able to run comfortably on it.

4. Horse Power – Most people do not pay attention to the horse power of the motor. Look for the term continuous duty rating. Look for something between 1.5 to 2.5 horsepower. Some have horsepower of 3. You do not need one that powerful but if you do not mind the extra cost you pay for a model with a horsepower of 3, that is fine.

5. Make sure the treadmill counts down when starting and the speed increases progressively when you start it. I have been on treadmills that start at the speed I set without counting down and have to immediately lower the speed manually. All treadmills should allow you to change your speed at any time using the arrow keys. Do not buy it if it does not allow you to do that.

6. Water Bottle holder – This should be a standard feature on most models. This is especially important if you do long walks or runs lasting 30 minutes or longer on your treadmill.

7. Speed Range – Look for one that goes up to 15km/h (9mph). An average person will not need more speed than that. A power walker walks at 7km/h to 8km/h (4.3mph to 5 mph). You will be jogging above 8km/h (5mph) and at 12km/h (7.5mph), you will be running.

8. Safety Key – This is a feature that will allow you to stop the treadmill immediately in the case of an emergency.

9. Warranty period – Look for a treadmill with 1 year or longer warranty periods. Do not purchase if the warranty period is less than 1 year. Do not be deceived by “X years warranty on frame”. Ask about the warranty on ALL parts, such as belts and electronics.

Optional Features you may want. These are features that will cost you more but if you feel that they are important to you, please go ahead and choose a model with these features.

1. Incline – Running at an incline, even at 1 degree, allows you to burn more calories as compared to running with no incline. Look for one that inclines at least 10 degrees and if you can afford, go for one that can incline 15 degrees or more.

2. Speakers – New treadmill models now have speakers where you can plug in your Ipod or MP3 player to play music from the built-in speakers while you run.

3. Fan – A few treadmills have a built-in fan. This will limit your choice of treadmills as there are not many models around with this feature.

Before heading down to your nearest fitness store, do your research online so that you do not waste too much time talking to salespeople who will try to sell you their latest models with the highest premiums.

Some precautions to take with a treadmill:

1. Please do not start an exercise programme before checking with your doctor.

2. Remove the safety key when not in use so that kids cannot fiddle around with your treadmill. They may get very hurt if their clothes get caught in the treadmill.

I hope this article has been helpful. Enjoy your machine.

Elliptical Machines – Best Elliptical Machine Secrets Will Save You Money!

Are you looking for the best elliptical machine at the best possible price? If so you’ll want to read my tips to find out which will be the best buy for you and/or your family. Choosing any elliptical trainer is much more complicated than just stopping in your favorite sports or fitness store, testing it out and buying it on the spot. Much more thought and research should be put into any fitness equipment that you buy today.

In the history of personal fitness and aerobics, ellipticals are the only aerobic products that have made a breakthrough. They only really came into the marketplace a few years ago and they’ve been gaining in popularity fast among users of all ages. Because elliptical machines are a cross between the treadmill and a stair climber you can easily cross-train too.

Elliptical machines offer the best cardiovascular workout. It doesn’t matter if you’re a novice or seasoned fitness user the elliptical trainer will work well on any exercise program you choose and you’ll find your own comfortable personal fitness level. It works well with a nice rhythmic flowing movement.

The good higher-end quality machines can give you a comfortable stride because they are larger and have better construction. Although there are trainers available with a 14-inch stride, make sure to pick a 21-inch stride for the best use and settings.

The elliptical trainer is a low/no impact machine so it’s the perfect machine for anyone suffering from joint problems that often occur in the knees, hips, back and ankles. That’ one major reason that they became so popular is that they give you an excellent aerobic workout without much stress to the joints. If you suffer from any kind of balance problems they are a better choice than the treadmill where good balance may be necessary. An elliptical workout provides a good body workout with very little strain.

Buying an elliptical machine online shouldn’t be hard to do and you’ll reap the benefits if you spend time comparing rankings, reviews and ratings. The basic must-have features include the drive and resistance systems and the proper stride length.

Make sure the model you choose has an adjustable and wide range of inclines. This will help with your aerobic activity as you move along in your workout or exercise routine. You’ll also want varying levels of resistance. The combination will give you the best possible workout. Make sure your adjustments are not jarring. You may want a trainer that has a few different programs that have been preset into the computer.

Make sure your elliptical trainer is quiet. You may want to be able to watch TV or listen to your favorite music or not disturb sensitive family members who need a quiet environment. Check to see that it has proper safety features. You may want cooling fans. Warm-up programs and cooldown programs help you work your muscles properly. A heart rate monitor is always a good feature to have. You can easily check out your aerobic and heart rate goals.

Of the many benefits the most important is the low impact benefit. They also have been proven to give a lower ‘feeling of exertion’ when you work out. Some studies report that because they optimize energy expenditure, that most people will burn more calories. The machine uses all the muscles in the lower part of the leg. And all the movement helps maintain healthy bone density. If you don’t have a lot of space or have a small workout area, they can be a good way to save space over other home exercise equipment.

There are a many good, popular and higher-end brands of elliptical machines in sports stores, specialty stores, fitness stores, big box stores and online stores including Precor, Life Fitness, SportsArt Fitness, Horizon, Nordic Track, Smooth, Schwinn, and Quantum Fitness. Many can handle users up to 180 kg (400 lbs) or so. They can range in price from 00 to 00.

If you want to save a lot of money, make sure to check out the online prices. Compare them to the offline prices in your sports, fitness specialty or big box stores. You’ll find that many of the dealers online will offer to ship them free. And if you know the model number that you want to buy you can check out the machine in your local stores and then compare the prices online.

The sports equipment consignment stores and used sporting goods stores usually have used or slightly used ellipticals at very low prices. Some of these will be in very good condition. That is because many people buy equipment they think you’ll use and then they don’t follow through as you probably know.

Try asking for a business discount, health professional discount or senior discount if appropriate. In any case ask for a discount, even if it’s on sale. Look for sales all year round. And there are still other ways to buy them cheaper.

To sum up there are many manufacturers of high technology home elliptical machines. There are many health benefits that can be reaped. You can easily find a low cost trainer with a little research. And if you’ve never used one you should give it a try before you buy.
