Question by sportshistorybuff: What does the letter K mean on the weights of exercise equipment?
I am in a foreign country working out on a weight machine with plates that read 10K, 20K, 30K, etc. Kilograms are supposed to be KG while pounds are lbs. What does K mean?

Question by Daniel K: How good are Exercise Bikes at fat burning?
I know you burn as many calories as on a treadmill. That treadmills are great for fat burning. Are exercise bikes great for fat burning? (They do burn fat obviously, but alot? same calories so..)
So exercise bikes dont burn your abdomen/belly fat?? thats what im using it for.

They’re better because they’re not as boring, so you’ll use it more. I own both, and I hate the treadmill. I haven’t used it since I first got it. I use the bike all the time.

Exercise balls are great for doing your abdominal exercises.  Not only does the activity become more fun, but you actually work harder while using the exercise ball.  When you do abdominal exercises with the ball, your body is working to stabilize itself and you get a greater range of motion for the best ab workout routine possible.  The benefit of this is that your core stays engaged while you do your abdominal exercises.  Not to mention, exercise balls are affordable and make abdominal exercises fun.

When choosing an exercise ball, you want to find your best fit.  The ball for you will come up to about your knees and you should be able to sit comfortably on it with your feet planted on the ground.  This is very important.  You may hurt yourself or not get the best workout if you are using the wrong ball.  You may also consider investing in a yoga or exercise mat.  This will make your abdominal exercises more comfortable for you.  Also, this is the best thing you can do for your back while doing your ab workout routine. 

So now that you are on the ball, what are the best abdominal exercises you can do?

Crunch with Your Exercise Ball

The crunch may be one of the simplest abdominal exercises you can do, but adding the exercise ball makes it more effective.  To do this crunch:

• Simply lie on the ball with the ball positioned against the small of your back. 
• Cross your arms over your chest.  By doing this instead of placing them behind your head forces your core to do the work instead of your neck and hands. 
• Keep your feet firmly planted on the ground. 
• Keep yourself stable and slowly sit up then lower yourself back into the starting position. 
• Exhale while rising and inhale while lowering your body. 
• Repeat this movement 10-15 times for 2-3 reps.

Exercise Ball Exchange

This is one of the slower abdominal exercises and it is important that you take your time with this one: 

• Lie on your back with your hands extended over your head
• Use an exercise or yoga mat for comfort, with the exercise ball placed between your ankles. 
• Slowly lift the exercise ball up above your torso and bring your arms to retrieve it lifting your shoulders off the ground. 
• Now slowly lie back down. 
• Now you should have the ball in your hands.  Bring the ball back to your feet. 
• Exhale while moving up and inhale while releasing down. 
• During this exercise it is important to keep your arms and legs extended, make the exchange above your torso, and do this in a controlled movement. 
• Pass the ball 10-15 times for 2-3 reps for your ab workout routine.

The Ab Roll

Here’s one more that will really engage your entire abdominal section from lower abs, to obliques, all the way to your upper abs:

• Kneel on the floor
• Use your exercise mat if you have one, and place your hands on the exercise ball in front of you. 
• Bring your naval in toward your spine and slowly roll your arm forward onto the ball. 
• Keep your body stable and roll the ball out as far as you can without hurting your back. 
• Once extended roll your body back into the starting position. 
• Repeat 10-15 times. 
• For this move it is important not to strain your back. 

Using the exercise ball during your ab workout routine will make the movements more comfortable, give you a greater range of motion, engage your core, and help you get six pack abs.  Remember to use it properly, so you don’t strain your back.  If you feel anything wrong, stop and consult your doctor.

Determining a dependable diet and exercise plan to lose weight has become harder and harder with so many diets available on the market today. There are really two things that are most important with any weight loss plan. The two ingredients to losing weight are, eating less and exercising more!

Your body burns calories throughout the day, but sometimes you eat additional calories than you burn, which leads to weight gain. By exercising as well as watching your calorie consumption, you will greatly help your body into losing weight.

Other easy ways to trim down on your calories are to eliminate any pre-packaged foods that you were previously using. Pre-packaged foods are well known for being high in chemicals, fats and calories. Build a habit of eating fruit and vegetables on a daily basis. Vegetables are great for a diet but some people don’t have time to shop every few days, so frozen is fine. Portion sizes are often a big issue with weight gain, so you need to cut the amount of food you plate up. Why not serve up on a smaller plate so it still looks like a full plate of food. A full plate is an amazing trick that works really well, as you still feel you have had a good meal.

Adding exercise to your daily routine doesn’t have to be a nightmare. Lots of people get put off by the suggestion of exercising at the local gym and also feeling mortified about it as well visiting a gym is not the only way! You must begin slowly if you haven’t exercised in a while. Just add a 10 minute walk to your day, even if it is just walking to the end of the street and back. You could time yourself and see how much quicker you get over time. Now step up the distances you walk, go to the local park or walk to a friend’s house that you would frequently use the car for. Any exercise is going to be beneficial. It is astonishing how quickly your body will adjust to this exercise and you can increase your daily workout regime.

Other straight forward exercises are swimming, dancing, cycling and stair climbing. Next time you are at the mall make a point of taking the stairs and not the lift. Any additional exercise is going to ultimately show up on the scale.

Any diet and exercise program for weight loss will work as these are the two primary ingredients, but it’s not as hard as you may have thought. There are more great resources available which offer everything from nutritional pointers to recipe ideas. Your weight loss journey needs to be interesting, so mix things up a bit and change your routine, but eat healthy and exercise, that’s the key.

Question by ♥Erica♥: How effective are exercise bikes in achieving weight loss?
I have just aquired an exercise bicycle from a friend of mine who was moving that didn’t wish to take it with her.
When I go to the gym (rarely) I usually use the elliptical machine, but since I have this bike now, I would much rather stay at home and workout.
My question is for those of you who ride exercise bikes, is it really just as effective as other machines at weight loss, or will I have to ride at longer intervals to achieve any type of results?
For the record, I’m 26 yrs old, 5’6 and weigh 130lbs, trying to get down to 120lbs, or at least stay in that range.

stationary bikes are awesome for weight loss. Ever hear of spinning? That burngs nearly 800-1200 calories an hour. And you can do it now in your own home. Look up on google some spinning tips, and you’ll be on your way to slimming down fast!! I have heard that bikes are the best way to lose weight..you’re working out your abs, thighs, calves, butt. Do some arm movements while you’re riding, and you’ll slim down in no time.

Are you aware that if you have a low amount of lean muscle tissue – lost because of a sedentary lifestyle you are much more at risk of having insulin resistance? And if you have insulin resistance your risk of getting diabetes increases.

What’s insulin resistance you ask?

When you eat food it is turned into sugar (glucose). Insulin is released to help move this sugar into the muscle cells for energy. However the cells can become less able to do this job due to a number of circumstances including becoming overweight, eating too many high sugar foods and lack of proper physical activity.

More and more insulin is secreted to try and remove high levels of sugar from the blood as having it there is highly damaging to the body. The high sugar levels plus the high insulin levels in the blood travel through the body affecting all the organ systems.

As this continues over the years the cell’s resistance to insulin and the job that it does worsens. This syndrome affects day-to-day living as wild swings in blood sugar lead to a roller coaster of food cravings and hunger signals that cause more overeating of high-sugar snacks as the body craves a quick energy fix.

This resistance to insulin continues to increase over time and precedes the medical condition diabetes. This is a condition you do not want to get as it causes the aging rate to double in sufferers. You do not die from diabetes but from the damage it does and it will dramatically shorten one’s lifespan due to complications like heart problems and a weakened immune system.

Researchers have found that a good body composition (muscle/fat ratio) reduces insulin resistance. They also found that those with low muscle mass from not doing enough muscle strengthening activity were 67 percent more likely to be insulin resistant than people who keep themselves strong.

So, strong healthy muscles are the key as they soak up blood sugar to use as fuel. The more toned muscle you have the more blood sugar they process and the lower the risk of continuing high blood sugar levels that lead to the devastating condition diabetes.

There is only one way to get that muscle toned back up to help you stay healthy and that is with proper strength training exercise. We lose muscle tissue as we get older as we become less active so rebuilding it with strength training is critical for everyone over the age of 30 (preferably younger).

Along with lowering blood sugar levels you will speed up your metabolism (your body’s engine) and burn more calories which will help you lose excess fat weight which again lowers diabetes risk.

When you engage in strength training you also promote heart health which is vital in people with high blood sugar as it can double and even quadruple the risk of heart disease.

After just a few months of regular strength training cells throughout your body become more sensitive to insulin, that vital hormone needed for sugar to enter cells. Then less will be needed to do its job which will reduce stress on overworked organs that are struggling to keep up with the high demands.

No matter your age you can quickly get started on your proper exercise program. All it takes is 2-3 sessions each week of an all over body program. You will be more in control of maintaining important blood sugar levels which will reduce the risk contracting diabetes which will give not only a longer life but a better quality of life as well.

I go to the gym and use the bike/gliders. they say your distance, heart rate, and some more stuff. it also tells me how many calories i’ve burned. how accurate are they with calorie burning? because according to the machine I burn about 350 each session, and I use it twice, so 700 calories.

Everybody’s body is different. Don’t gauge your performance by what the numbers tell you. Instead, judge your workout by how you feel at the end of it.

Most machines calculate calories burned directly from distance traveled, which isn’t very accurate.

Large arms are created with a combination of triceps and bicep work. But it is the bicep muscle that peoples eyes focus on, hence extra attention should be given to this all important “mirror” muscle. Though all bicep exercises involve the curling motion, I have found one to be significantly better for building the mass and peak that most people look for.

The single best muscle building bicep exercise is the Hanging Bicep Curl. Here’s how you do it. Take an adjustable bench and set it at a 45 degree incline and lie on it so you are chest down. Your arms will dangle straight down towards the floor. Grab an EZ Curl bar and do what comes natural. Curl it. I do 5 pyramided sets of 8-10 reps.

The reason that this is such a mass builder is because in this exercise you are in the same position as you would be seated on a preacher curl bench, but the advantage here is that there is no pressure on any JOINT. Everything hangs loose, meaning you can use massive tonnage without fear of straining anything in the shoulder, elbow or wrist joints. You can curl significantly more weight in this position than sitting or standing. Try it and you’ll see.

Now you can use dumbbells in this position but, as we all know, you can use much more weight going with a bar and we are talking mass building here. And again, without joint strain, you can use A LOT more weight. As an example, from a standing position if you can curl 100 lbs with an EZ curl bar, in the hanging bicep curl position you can do 170 lbs. This is the proportional increase that I have. Granted if you want to swing your arms to give yourself momentum to curl, you can. I do. But only on the last couple reps.

My first question to you is this, if you are interested in building muscle mass in your bicep do you think lifting 1.7 times what you normally use for a bicep curl will have a mass building affect? Question by MSI Magus: How accurate inaccurate are the calorie counters on exercise bikes?
Every day I hope on an exercise bike for about an hour or so. It usually says I burn somewhere between 1,000 and 1,500 calories. I am wondering how close to this number I actually might be hitting. Are these bikes often off by a small amount like 100-200 calories…..or are they frequently off by 100s of calories?

totally inaccurate, they are a rough estimate based on a certain gender of a certain height and weight of a certain age all of which probably dont apply to you unless you are mr or mrs average, i take absolutely no notice of them at all, i would say that on average someone would be burning off approx 600-1000 calories per hour but you would have to be really putting some effort in to get anywhere near that amount of calories burnt.

You should run the bike for approximately 30 to 40 minutes to reach the 65% to 70% mark. This will enable you to burn about 300 calories, which is a good number to promote continuous weight loss.
